Fleet Captain: Karena Knaggs

The Ideal 18 is our club fleet that is used for Thursday evening fleet racing, team racing, clinics, private sailing lessons, family fun day regattas and other one design events. Many Long Island Sound clubs also own Ideal 18s so there are lots of opportunities to travel in and around western Long Island Sound for one design opportunities.

The Ideal 18 is a stable 18-foot keelboat that offers sailors of all ages and skill levels a wide range of sailing opportunities. It is comfortable, easily sailed, and provides competitive racing within the Club and with neighboring clubs. Unlike other fleets, all ten of the Ideals 18s at AYC are owned by the Club and available to anyone who joins the Ideal 18 program. The boats are moored in our harbor from April through October and are quickly accessibly by launch. Sailors can easily rig the Ideal, consisting of a large mainsail, a roller-furling jib, and if so desired a symmetrical spinnaker, and then get out to the race course or just go for a pleasure sail. Usually sailed by a skipper and one or two crew, the Ideal 18 can also accommodate a family of four or five.
